The second step to Peace of Mind Parenting is developing coping skills that work. It is critically important to take the time to center, re‐energize and renew yourself each day. Practicing different methods of stress management will not only improve your mindset, the satisfaction and joy that you demonstrate will be contagious – positively affecting the mindsets of your family, friends, co‐workers, and, most importantly, your teen. The following seven tips will get you started…
1. Take 30 minutes for yourself each day.
Take a full 30 minutes or break the time up into ten or fifteen‐minute intervals.
2. Make an appointment to practice self care.
Scheduling time will ensure a cleared place in your already busy schedule. Think of your daily renewal time as any other appointment that you make and keep.
3. Try several types of self care to build interest and desire for positive results.
There are many types of stress management from which to choose, such as meditation, guided imagery, relaxation, exercise, affirmations, aroma or music therapy, and journaling.
4. Practice coping skills.
Select several different methods of coping skills that “speak to you” so that you enjoy it and continue to practice it. Ideally, you will learn to anticipate this well earned time for yourself.
5. Manage your time.
Time management and self care go hand in hand. When you are organized and clear about the goals and action steps you need for success, your desire for a renewed spirit will be heightened.
6. Communicate your desire to practice stress management.
Inform your family that you will be taking a break in your hectic day in order to refuel your mind, body and spirit. You will be setting an example for others to plan and practice self care.
7. Model behavior change.
Behavior change will be the reward of your self care efforts. Recognize and celebrate it.
